The differences between "hot" and "cold" varieties are fairly plain: When a cold flame ignites, it might only kick out heat hotter than its surroundings by a few tens of degrees Celsius, while a hot flame spikes the temperature by thousands. That is the fuel is burning, but so little energy is being produced that there's no light being emitted and very little heat too.
